Baby Alive was a child's doll created in the 1970s by Kenner to teach children about caring for babies. The first dolls were designed to move their mouths when fed powered doll food and water, eventually soiling their diapers. Their diapers would need to be changed to prevent leakage and mold growth.

In 2006, Hasbro bought the Baby Alive franchise and reintroduced the doll. However, this doll spoke and had a less-realistic face. The doll would let you know when she needed to be fed or needed her diaper changed.

While most of the Baby Alive dolls ate powdered doll food mixed with water (Happy Hungry Baby, Sweet Spoonfuls Baby, Learns to Potty, Changing Time Baby, etc.), some ate play dough food (Snackin' Sara, Snackin' Lily, Snackin' Luke, Breakfast Time Baby, Snackin' Noodles, etc.), some were only drink-and-wet dolls (Lil Sips, Baby Go Bye Bye, Sip & Slurp, Baby Gotta Bounce, etc.), and some didn't need to be fed at all (Lil Sounds, Twinkles & Tinkles, Sip 'N Snooze Newborn, Lils, etc.).

Types of dolls:[]

  • Soft-face dolls, such as Learns to Potty, Happy Hungry Baby, and Snackin' Sara.
  • Dolls that kick their legs, such as Wets 'n Wiggles, Changing Time Baby, and Baby Go Bye Bye.
  • Potty-training dolls. While Learns to Potty used diapers and the potty seat, Potty Dance Baby did not require diapers.
  • Hair-styling dolls, such as Snip 'n Style Baby, Play 'n Style Christina, and So Many Styles Baby.
  • Voice-activated dolls, such as Real As Can Be Baby and Baby Gotta Bounce.
  • Dolls that came with books, such as Ready For School Baby and Once Upon a Baby.

While originally designed for girls, some of the newer talking dolls now have a "daddy" feature so boys can play as well. Unisex diaper patterns are also available.

Tips and warnings:[]

Baby Alive food/drinks are not meant for human or animal consumption. While the play dough food is reusable, the powdered mixes are not once water is added. To avoid mold, thoroughly clean the doll after feeding and diaper changing; it is not recommended to give human food/drinks to the doll. Do not place battery-operated dolls in water. Wet Baby Alive diapers are not meant to be reused and are to be thrown in the garbage. Do not leave dead or dying batteries inside the doll to avoid leakage. Do not place sharp objects inside a soft-face doll's mouth. Never use Baby Alive products on a human baby. Never shake a human baby: this can cause brain damage or death.
